Haleakala Summit & Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon – Paia, Hawaii

This is Part 4 of our Maui Food Adventures!  Check out the rest!

One of our excursions in Maui was to get up at 3am in the morning to make it to the Haleakala Summit to catch the sunrise.

It was breath-taking and well worth the trip!  I didn’t quite survive the drive up the two sets of hairpin turns without feeling sick so I strongly suggest taking some Gravol before you go….stupid me…I did bring some but was in such a hurry to leave that I forgot to take some!

I also wished that we had gone up a bit earlier to do some stargazing before the dark turns to light and the sun begins to rise. Maybe we’ll do it again next time.

A note though. It is now required to make reservations for parking on the summit before you go. You WILL be denied entry if you don’t. Reservations only cost $1.50USD (but entry to the park itself is $20USD) but only during sunrise hours (between 3am to 7am I believe). Outside of that timeframe no reservation is needed.

Charley's Restaurant 7 Saloon - Paia, Maui

We decided to drive to the town of Paia after and AngryRussian was famished…I, on the other hand…was not for obvious reasons 😜.

He chose Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon as it looked like they had a rad Bloody Mary bar.  It’s western themed and they claim that they’re Willie Nelson’s favorite haunt in Maui!

Unfortunately, it seems that’s only for Sunday brunch 😟.  Anyhoo…

Charley's Restaurant Loco Moco

AngryRussian picked the Loco Moco ($14USD).  The description on the menu:
An island favorite. Our pasture raised, hormone free, all natural, 1/2 pound burger, with rice, mushroom gravy, 2 fried eggs and crispy onions.

The whole mixture was delicious and honestly, anything with runny egg yolk can’t go wrong.  The gravy was rich and delicious and the beef patty was thick.  I can see why this is an island favorite!

Charley's Restaurant - Traditional French Toast

As I wasn’t super hungry and had been craving french toast every breakfast but never ordered it, I finally did this time.  The Traditional French Toast($8USD) was described as ” Our cinnamon and vanilla with thick cut “texas toast” is the secret to our award winning french toast”.

Unfortunately, as soon as I saw the maraschino cherry on top I was disappointed.  The toast was just okay.  Nothing really amazing to note.

All in all it was a hit & miss at Charley’s.
