Kingsway Sushi 東壽司 AYCE

Kingsway Sushi has recently become my favorite place for All-you-can-eat (AYCE) japanese (albeit chinese-made) food.  They have quality fresh sashimi and a decent selection of items in their Deluxe Dinner menu.

It was a Saturday so the place was packed.  Good thing we made reservations, but still we waited for about 15 minutes.  Those without reservations had to wait about 1 hour.

We started ordering quite a bit of stuff.  The best thing yet was the geoduck but I forgot to take picture of that!!!  But it was really really crisp and sweet.

Kingsway Sushi: Oysters

Oysters were the next must-have.  They always serve the nice, small ones that were meant for raw consumption.  I have been to places where they serve the big fat ones which should be reserved for oyster motoyaki or some other cooked dish, NOT raw.  These were creamy and crisp.  Between the 4 of use we had 4 dozen.  Would’ve ordered more if it weren’t for the other selections in the menu~

Kingsway Sushi: Scallop Pearl

This was an interesting thing.  It’s called “Scallop Pearl” and it’s the first time we’ve ordered it.  It’s basically a roll of rice, topped with chopped scallop, topped with half a lychee.  It was not bad.  The taste combination was interestingly good.

Kingsway Sushi sashimi

This is probably one of the few places that serve sockeye salmon sashimi in there AYCE menu, as sockeye tends to be a more expensive salmon.  We like it because it is less fatty therefore we are able to have more pieces before we’ve had enough.  Also ordered were squid, saba, and amaebi (sweet prawn!!!) sashimi.  I’ve only recently learnt to eat saba, and it was mighty good!  Some places’ saba tastes extremely fishy, but not here.  The amaebi were not as sweet as the last time I had it though.  Same with the squid.  It had no taste.

Kingsway Sushi: Beef Tataki

This might scare a lot of people.  It is basically raw beef slices that are lightly seared on the outside.  This is really good, since it is marinated with ponzu (I think), ginger, and soya sauce.  I’ve had it since forever and I have yet to have any type of stomach problems or mad-cow disease.  We order it every time it’s offered.  The slices were not chewy and unbreakable like some places.  Very good!

Kingsway Sushi: Tuna Tataki

Tuna Tataki is prepared the same way as the Beef Tataki above.  This time it was a bit of a disappointment since you couldn’t really taste the fish.  However, as I recall, tuna never really had a taste did it?  Oh well, I never was a big fan of tuna anyways.

Other items ordered were deep-fried smelt, prawn tempura, yam tempura, beef short-ribs, and that’s about all I remember.  The fried items all tasted very fresh.  This is especially evident in the smelt since if it’s old, it becames quite hard and chewy.  That was not the case here.

The prawn tempura was equally good.  The batter was a “bit” thick, but very crispy and light.  Best of all you can actually taste the prawn inside.

Yam tempura was well cooked too, resulting in a nice, mushy texture inside while the outside is light and crispy.

The beef short-ribs had lots of meat on it.  Basically, the whole thing aside from the bone part was meat.  Very satisfying~!

Kingsway Sushi: deep-fried milk pudding

Then it was dessert time.  This is probably the only place to offer deep-fried milk pudding.  I remember having this when I was younger in Hong Kong.  Back then they had flavors like honeydew melon and mango…I wonder if they still have those flavors in Hong Kong.  Anyways, back to here.  They are wrapped in spring roll wrappers.  Again the skin was crispy, not chewy.  The filling was just the right amount of creaminess and sweetness.  I had about 4 of these.  They’re always a hit with me~

Kingsway Sushi: baked tapioca pudding with black sesame

This is another unique offering here.  It’s baked tapioca pudding with black sesame.  It’s always good to end with this.

I also had mango pudding for dessert.  It had great mango taste and wasn’t too sweet.  I didn’t get any fruit bits in my portion though.  I think the last time I had it it did.  Maybe my part of the pan didn’t get any fruit!

A very filling and satisfying dinner.  We always hold our bellies when we go here, and then I always swear off AYCE forever.  But I always crave for it by the next month, sometimes the next week!

This menu costs $25.95 per person before taxes.  You can see the menu at their website. Their sister site, Richmond Sushi, is my second choice.  Although there I will just have the regular Deluxe menu (their version of Kingsway Sushi’s deluxe menu is called the Super Deluxe Menu) since the Super Deluxe is $2 more.  Hey, I’m Chinese, what do you expect??
