It was another weekly dim sum brunch with Mum. This day she wanted to go to Walmart so we decided to yum cha at Kirin Restaurant in New Westminster, at Starlight Casino.
I really like the decor of the place. It’s unlike other Chinese Seafood Restaurants in that it’s not all red with a dragon and a phoenix at the back. It’s quite modern looking.
Now on to the food!!
After having the Steamed Mushroom Dumpling at The Jade the other day, I was ecstatic to see that it was on the menu here too.
But I was disappointed to see that it wasn’t made using the same type of dumpling skin as the previous. The skin they use here is similar to the ones used for siu long bao.
Nonetheless, it was good. There was a lot of filling in the dumpling and it was very flavorful.
Next was the Deep Fried Shrimp and Fresh Mango Roll. This is one of our favorites whenever we come to Kirin.
There were copious amounts of shrimp in this. The mango was tart and sweet and soft. The wrapping was crispy. Mom appreciate that they use fresh oil to make this, judging by the paleness of the fried product. We like this.
This is mom’s favorite – Deep fried Prawn Dumpling served with Consomme. Again this was really crispy and chewy at the same time due to the dunking of this into the consomme. We enjoyed this too.
Last dim sum was the Steamed Rice Roll with Chinese Donut. This was just okay. It should’ve came topped with pork floss but it didn’t. The soy sauce was a bit too salty for rice roll. The dipping sauces were good though. The sesame sauce seems to be homemade.
For afternoon dessert we were recommended the Pumpkin and Purple Rice Puree. Normally this would be good but we think this was probably last night’s dessert as the coconut milk tasted a little sour. It was also not hot enough.
Overall dim sum here was good though, and not too expensive. All that totaled $22 with tips.
The rice roll is sure presented all fancy schmancy.
