Update May 2, 2011: This restaurant is now closed.

It was dinner with Fannypack again today.  As usual, I had to pick the place to go to.  Having passed by Negative Space Chinese Restaurant at Pacific Plaza one day on my way to Berry Good, I chose that place.

Negative Space Chinese Restaurant

It is located right at the corner of Odlin Crescent and McKim Way.  Despite how many pictures I’ve taken at restaurants and of restaurants, I still feel uncomfortable doing it when I know people can see me…which explains the bad quality of the picture above…I was in too much of a hurry.

Negative Space Chinese Restaurant

I must say they have a pretty small menu.  Later we found out that it’s not their real menu, and that the real one will come in about a week.  I’m not sure how long this place has been opened, but Fannypack told me that when she went in, the first thing they asked was how we knew of the place.  Later we noticed that almost half of the customers there were friends of the staff/owner.

Negative Space Chinese Restaurant: Cold Tofu

First up was the Cold Tofu.  I thought it was pretty good.  The sauce was flavorful enough to flavor the tofu.  This was about $5.

Negative Space Chinese Restaurant: Spicy Clams

I thought this was probably the best dish of the night- Spicy Clams.  It wasn’t extremely spicy, just tickles your throat a bit.  The sauce was very good, likely due to either the ginger or chilis.  Fannypack commented that it wasn’t very hot though, even with the fire thingamijig on the bottom.  We enjoyed this ($11.95?)

Negative Space Chinese Restaurant: Garlic Steamed Pumpkin

Our only veggie dish was the Garlic Steamed Pumpkin.  We thought the soy sauce tasted a lot like Lee Kum Kee’s sweet soy sauce for steaming fish.  We decided that’s probably what it was.  The pumpkin were soft but didn’t really have any flavor of the soy sauce, but then pumpkin is good by itself anyways.  So in conclusion, we thought this was just ok.  It was quite expensive at $7.45.

Negative Space Chinese Restaurant: Grilled Oyster

Lastly was their daily special.  The weird thing was, they didn’t inform us of the specials until after we placed the order for everything.  Usually other places will either tell you about them as they’re seating you or before you order.  If she had inform us, we would’ve ordered one thing less.  On second thought, that’s probably the reason why…

Anyways, this was what they described to me as Grilled Oyster.  When I first heard that, I had to ask her to repeat it.  I thought it was going to be like bbq grilled, or like robata.  But it didn’t turn out that way.

The sauce was a butter garlic sauce.  The oyster was very fresh and fat.  Very tasty.

  1. Hmm, they’re still working out the lumps and bumps.

Doesn’t seem quite ready to be opened to be public yet.

  2. That’s a pretty big piece of tofu! Was it smooth? I really love “tapas” type food, you can sample so many different dishes…

Comment? Question? I'd love to hear from you!
