This is Part 13 of our Maui Food Adventures! Check out the rest!
We had originally planned to go to a luau on this last Tuesday evening that we were in Maui, then we realized that it was “Tacolicious Tuesday” at Fred’s Mexican Cafe, so we made the decision to try the luau next time we’re here and headed on to Fred’s instead.
Fred’s Mexican Cafe is located right across from Kamaole Beach Park II. We had to wait for a bit but we were given a pager to be notified when our table was ready.
When it was, we were lucky to snag a table on the patio with a view of the sunset and beach!
Complimentary chips and salsa to start.
Margaritas were also on special for $5USD each. I asked if they had bulldogs, which is basically a Margarita with a Coronita inverted into it. Our server obviously knew what I was asking for as she described it back to me exactly the same way. And she said that yes they do have it. So then we ordered two.
They arrived as margaritas. Not Bulldogs. No explanation, no apologies, nothing. We didn’t bother to ask about it as I didn’t want to deal with the reply.
Anyways the drink itself was HUGE (20 ozs!) and tasty. We would’ve been ok with sharing one.
I might’ve went overboard with the ordering (just ask AngryRussian he’ll agree with that). I basically wanted one of everything. So I kind of did and we shared everything.
Here’s what we ordered in total:
- 1 Buffalo Chicken
- 2 Calamari
- 2 Baja Fish
- 1 Carnitas
- 1 Ahi
- 1 Shrimp
- 1 Mahi
My favorite was the Shrimp Taco and then the Ahi. The Calamari was a bit of a disappointment (it had a lot to live up to after Kinaole Grill). To be honest the rest I found to be quite bland.
We ended up packing two to go as we just couldn’t finish everything. It made for a good dinner on a lazy night!
