This is Part 6 of our Victoria Food Adventures! Check out the rest here!
AngryRussian had heard good things about John’s Place and apparently, it’s a pretty iconic Victoria brunch spot, so we had to check it out. By the time we got to John’s Place at around 9am, they already had a line up 2 party deep. We waited about 15-20 minutes for a table.
The inside of the restaurant was hella eclectic, and matched the vibe very well. There were tons of sports memorabilia and signed photos. Despite being covid times, I would say the tables were still packed in pretty tight.
Their menu is gigantic. It took us a good minute to decide on what to get.
But as soon as I saw “country steak gravy” on their Weekend Special Sheet, I was done. I am ADDICTED to country-fried anything. Why would anyone be?
What I decided on was the Chicken n Waffle Benny ($15). Official description: Half Belgian waffle topped with a crispy chicken cutlet, country steak gravy, 2 poached free run eggs and our savoury hollandaise sauce. Served with your choice of homefries or fresh or grilled tomatoes.
This was a big plate of food. The chicken cutlets were average (would’ve preferred thigh) but they were well-seasoned and moist. The poached eggs were runny as they should be, and the country gravy was delicious. The waffle got a little soggy towards the end but that’s expected given how much sauce was on top. Yum!
As for AngryRussian, he chose the “BAT OUT OF HELL” MEATLOAF ‘N’ EGGS ($17). Described as “Two slices of our Southwestern meatloaf made from ground beef and pork with mushroom Marsala gravy and two FREE RUN eggs any style. Served with your choice of toast, English muffin, sesame bagel or house made savoury cornbread and your choice of seasoned home fries or fresh tomato, or grilled tomatoes.“
Another huge plate of food. This was apparently featured on the Food Network show “You Gotta Eat Here”. The meatloaf was thick cut and was smothered in their delicious mushroom gravy. The cornbread was moist but could’ve had more kick. Overall an extremely satisfying plate of food.
We totally see the allure of John’s Place! It’s good food in a casual setting, with great prices! This will be another one on our list of re-visits next time we’re back!
