This is Part 8 (and the last) of our Victoria Food Adventures! Check out the rest here!
After a great afternoon of whale-watching, we made it down to Fishhook (website) in downtown Victoria per AngryRussian’s friend Junk’s recommendation. Junk highly recommended we try Fishhook’s “Squimp Toast”, so we made a point of checking them out. He also told us to go to the Fort St location since at the time, there were 2 locations and the Mermaid Wharf did not have it.
Fishhook is self-described as Indo-French fusion, and their menu has lots of seafood prepared in Indian flavors.
The Fort St location was a tiny space, and with COVID restrictions in place there was even less seating available. Luckily for us it was wasn’t busy when we visited so we had our choice of seating and we sat right by the window.
Fishhook has some simple but interesting drink creations, and their Chai Cream Soda ($4) caught my eye. AngryRussian had a Hoyne’s Dark Matter.
My Chai Cream soda had the usual vanilla-y flavor, with additional subtle Chai flavoring. The chai could be stronger though, but I still enjoyed this.
And this is it! The Squimp Toast ($10), made with smoked humboldt squid, shrimp, green onion, harissa, crispy shallots, red chili honey. I LOVE squid.
There was so much topping on this toast! Each bite was bursting with smoky flavor from the harissa and the…smoked humboldt squid. It was savory and spicy and all around tasty. It also didn’t eat as messy as it could’ve been as the squid and shrimp were in decent sized chunks so they didn’t fall all over the place.
We ordered one more tartine (that’s what Fishhook call’s their toasts) to try- The Belly ($14.5). It consisted of broil-seared wild salmon belly, smoked salmon, spicy sauerkraut, “herb’d” chive mustard, dill pickles.
We were amazed at the size of the salmon belly in the sandwich! It was huge and I loved that they were cooked till just done so they were not dry at all. Again all the flavors were on point and we were just so impressed by this.
We’re so happy that AngryRussian’s friend introduced Fishhook to us! It was a great find and will be another addition to our revisit list!
I will leave you with a taste of our whale-watching tour. We went with Spring Tide Tours and they were great! Out of all the companies I looked at, they had the best price and from my experience, the service was top-notch! We would definitely go with them again next time 🐳!
