Having Hawaiian shave ice was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Aside from Local Boys, we also gave Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice a try. Which one fared better? Read on to find out!
Ululani’s is probably one of the more well-known and more popular shave ice shops. Right after we ordered and was enjoying our yummies, the line-up grew quite large (not pictured here).
There’s quite a large seating area for enjoying your shave ice. The tables have holes drilled into them for your cups!
As you can see on the menu above, Ululani’s charges extra for items that Local Boys give for free, such as ice cream and cream on top.
They also make it sound like their shave ice is superior to others and if you hit a white patch of ice you can go to the front of the line to get more syrup. We didn’t have to do that.
I made my own mix of the flavors melona (honeydew melon), vanilla, and pina colada. I also added haupia (coconut pudding) and mochi. This made my shave ice quite expensive.
I enjoyed my mix of flavors. The mochi was very soft and chewy and tasted freshly made. I didn’t understand the haupia though…it just tasted and had the texture of coconut ice cream to me, so I’m not sure why it’s described as pudding.
As for the texture of the ice, I actually find it more coarse and rough here at Ululani’s than Local Boys.
AngryRussian picked the No Ka Oi which has mango, coconut and passionfruit syrup. He didn’t add anything to his.
All in all, flavor-wise, the syrups at both Ululani’s and Local Boys tasted natural and authentic. However I found the texture of Local Boys’ shave ice to be softer and fluffier, that and the fact that Local Boys doesn’t charge extra for their extras, makes them the winner in my books. Service speed though, Ululani’s takes the cake.
